In this new special event, Museum Managers, CEO, Leader Curators, and Directors are invited to attend a free online summit during the BCMA annual conference to connect, exchange ideas, and learn. Join your peers online for a special 1.5-hour online event on October 18, 2021, from 11 am - 12:30 pm.
The BCMA, in partnership with museum consultants Mighty Museum, has recently completed a year-long study of systemic governance challenges in small and medium museums across the province. This soon-to-be-published study concludes that BC's museum sector is facing a governance crisis that is contributing to staff burnout, impeding reconciliation and equity initiatives, and perpetuating toxic working environments. While this study specifically explored governance in small and medium museums, the discussion about how we as museum managers can address systemic challenges, toxic working environments, and how power can be more equitably divided is something that applies to organizations of all sizes.
After the presentation, we will have an opportunity for museum managers to reconnect, discuss shared challenges, and brainstorm future opportunities. This free event is open to all museum professionals in BC who are in a senior management role. If you would like to invite a colleague who we may have missed, please email bcma@museum.bc.ca. We strive to create a safe, respectful environment where attendees can talk openly and honestly about the challenges they are facing.
For questions or suggestions, please contact Ryan Hunt at executivedirector@museum.bc.ca.
Please feel free to drop in or out of the Summit if your schedule doesn't allow you to attend the full session.
2021 Museum Manager Summit Schedule:
11:00 - 11:45 am - Presentation on the "Governance Crisis in BC's Museum Sector" from Mighty Museum.
11:45 am - 12:30 pm - Open Discussion with Museum Managers
