About Us:
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) stands as a beacon of culture and community, nestled just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria in a serene park-like setting. Established in 1951 and housed in both contemporary exhibition spaces and the historic 1889 Spencer mansion, AGGV is not only the largest public art gallery on Vancouver Island but also one of the most significant in Canada, boasting an impressive collection of over 20,000 pieces of visual and decorative arts. As a growing non-profit organization, we are committed to excellence, innovation, diversity, and inclusivity, firmly believing in the power of collaboration to achieve our goals.
About the Role:
The Graphic Designer & Social Media Coordinator supports the interdepartmental activities at the Gallery by archiving, designing, producing, implementing, coordinating, and publishing digital and graphic content. These include digital marketing efforts and audio-visual interpretive materials. Reporting to the Marketing Specialist, this position works closely on communication planning and serves as a liaison with external contractors, such as graphic designers, exhibition designers, videographers, and printing service providers.
Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be responsible for creating engaging social media content to enhance the community’s awareness of Gallery exhibitions and programs. You’ll manage both organic and paid social media efforts, including SEO and calendar listings, while ensuring community management across all social channels. Staying current with social media platform updates will help you maximize engagement. You'll work closely with the Marketing Specialist to ensure social media publishing timelines and communication plans are followed, and that website and digital signage content are always accurate and up to date. Additionally, you’ll upload video, audio, and other digital assets to the website, ensuring their accessibility and usability.
You will also oversee media production, including recording, editing, and finalizing online content such as artist talks, educational videos, and live performances. For simple projects, you’ll provide technical support, while for more complex audio-visual projects, you will coordinate with technical support teams. Keeping your Adobe Creative Suite skills up to date will help ensure maximum effectiveness in production. In collaboration with colleagues, artists, and external collaborators, you’ll organize, and coordinate recorded and live programs, while also managing digital assets and assisting with production calendars and archives.
In terms of graphic design, you’ll be responsible for designing and coordinating various exhibition and program materials. This includes producing brochures and maintaining signage, as well as providing design support for other Gallery departments as needed. You'll also handle procurement, creating cost estimates for design projects, and preparing mock-ups, samples, and materials for presentations.
In addition, you’ll support various events with photography and video, assist with traveling exhibitions, and may be required to supervise project interns.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, media production, design, digital communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2-3 years of experience in digital production (photo, video, audio), with advanced photography and video skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication, organizational skills, attention to detail, and proofreading abilities.
- Experience working with diverse groups and providing courteous service.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Reader, Adobe Premiere Pro), Hootsuite, Meta Campaign Manager, Meta Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Skilled in managing and optimizing social media platforms.
