Programing and Events Coordinator
The British Columbia Aviation Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving aircraft, artifacts, and stories relating to the aviation history of British Columbia. Situated at the Victoria International Airport in North Saanich, BC, the museum occupies approximately 45,000 square feet of display space and a collection of over 10, 000 artifacts. The Museum has three full-time staff and over one-hundred volunteers that are dedicated to the operation of the museum. Our collection has more than 40 aircraft on display that once flew in Canadian skies, mostly over British Columbia with our earliest aircraft dating back to 1910. In some cases, our aircraft on display are all that is left of the aircraft that took to the skies over BC.
Currently, the BC Aviation Museum is looking for an intern to primarily work as the Programming and Events Coordinator, while also assisting with various tasks and projects that are essential to the operation of the museum. The position will entail working with a variety of departments, which will allow for the intern to earn knowledge and hands on skills in all aspects of the museum’s operations. We believe it is important for the intern to experience working with an array of departments, as most museums and heritage sites across Canada employ six or less staff members, leading staff to share/complete the work of multiple positions.
The intern will primarily work alongside the Assistant Director and the Executive Director with some overlap with the events committee and education department to plan events and programming initiatives that can be drawn from throughout the internship and in the future.
The position will entail job shadowing (mostly at the start), aiding with projects, and attending meetings to further their understanding of what a programming and event coordinator job will look like. Once the intern gains some experience on how the museum operates and what will be expected of them, they will begin receiving projects of their own that will promote programming and events within the museum.
One of the projects the intern will work on with the Executive Director and Assistant Director is the planning and preparation of Open House, the museum’s largest annual fundraiser. By working on this event, it will also provide the intern with valuable information on event planning and fundraising initiatives that can be applied while working at future organizations.
Ideally, the candidate will have graduated from a program in museum studies, history, or social sciences. Equivalences, and relevant work experience will also be considered. The ideal candidate should have a basic understanding of programming and event planning.
To be eligible for this position, you must meet the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program criteria for internships (https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/careers-heritage-graduates.html).
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
- are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
The BC Aviation Museum is committed to the principles of diversity and employment equity under the Employment Equity Act, and we strive to ensure that our workforce reflects the diverse nature of Canadian society. Our policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified persons without regard to race, gender, colour, disability, national origin, age, religion, union affiliation, sexual orientation, veteran status, citizenship, gender identity and/or expression, or other status protected by law.
As this position will involve working with youth under the age of 18, the candidate must be able to pass a criminal record check.
Please respond with a resume and cover letter by April 18th to emmamcgugan@bcam.net.
