The Lillooet District Historical Society (LDHS) is a team dedicated to keeping the Lillooet area’s history alive working from a community museum in Lillooet, British Columbia. Our vision is to revitalize the museum, which was established in 1963, and engage the community in a variety of public programming such as historical tours, educational activities, and exhibits.

Lillooet is situated within the traditional territory of the northern St’át’imc Nation in the beautiful Sun Country region of BC. Lillooet (population approx. 2,500), is surrounded by rugged mountain beauty and this makes it a natural tourist hot spot, particularly in relation to wine tourism, the Farmers Market, and the Miyazaki House. It has many opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation, as well as a vibrant arts community.

Job Summary

The LDHS is looking for a Heritage Manager willing to take on the challenge of revitalizing a community museum, including responsibilities associated with professionalizing the Lillooet Museum to include an archives, embracing industry standards for collection management, bringing the collections online, and working toward presenting an inclusive history of the Lillooet area with year-round heritage programming.

The position, which calls for a dynamic and committed individual, may offer the possibility of also managing additional heritage building(s) or site(s), as funding allows.

The LDHS currently has funding for year-round operations with a Heritage Manager position allocated a minimum of 15 hours per week. The LDHS board seeks a Heritage Manager capable of working with the board, and other community resources, to diversify revenue streams and secure additional funding in the form of own source revenues, community support, and grants to grow the budget and expand the hours available to fund staff position(s). Among the strategic goals of the LDHS is to secure sustainable funding to offer heritage programs year-round.

The 15-hour minimum work week would be determined in discussion with the board and a flexible week may be necessary in order to meet community programming needs. Some evening attendance at board meetings and events may be required.

Experience with managing a non-profit organization and demonstrated knowledge of curatorial and/or archival standards would make for an ideal candidate for this position. The Heritage Manager will be responsible for overseeing multiple projects and programs at once and communicating directly with the LDHS President and board.

General Responsibilities and Duties

  • Efficient coordination of all day-to-day operations and activities of the heritage sites including the Lillooet Museum.
  • Ensure operations are in compliance with objectives and strategies as well as heritage industry best practices
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in all respects including, but not limited to, collections management, employment agreements, contracts, receipts/invoices, and safety records.
  • Assume the role of Secretary and Treasurer for the Society while attending board meetings in a non-voting capacity, in the event of vacancies in these board positions.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 2+ years’ non-profit industry experience and in a supervisory capacity with a preference given to those with a heritage, arts, culture, museums, library, archives, history, anthropology, archaeology, or related background
  • Demonstrated interest, aptitude, and knowledge as a curator and/or archivist undertaking exhibit projects and collections management responsibilities
  • Proven success with grant writing
  • Experience drafting and implementing strategic and operational work plans
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once with no decline in quality control
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid BC driver’s license (class 5 minimum)
  • Criminal record check clearance
  • Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a community museum and archives, or other non-profit, with minimal supervision

Applicants must be willing to live in or relocate to the Lillooet area.

The position is part-time permanent with an hourly wage of $23.00. There is the possibility of regular performance-based increases and additional hours as funding allows.

Among the resources available to the Heritage Manager will be the Lillooet Area Community Connect Innovation HUB, which is an exciting new venture to support connections, competency, and confidence among non-profits through a Lillooet Grown, Lillooet Made, Lillooet Places business model. The HUB provides training, mentorship, and apprenticeship programs to support non-profits and business owners in the community. Now is an exciting time to direct a new vision for the heritage sector in Lillooet supported by the LDHS board, the HUB, and the other community resources.
