Duties

FORT LANGLEY
You arrive at our picturesque, historic Fort Langley, built on this location in 1840 as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. As you enter the palisade walls, the original 1840 storehouse faces you and a series of reconstructed buildings completes the look of the historic fort. A blacksmith clangs away in the corner and a cooper shapes barrels in the cooperage. The HBC flag flies high and the Big House presides stately at the top of the fort. Heritage presenters tend to the garden and farm animals.

COLWOOD
You arrive at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites where a group of quiet deer greet you upon your arrival. Walking around the site, you uuncover the Fort’s military secrets, from underground tunnels and bunkers to hidden command posts and camouflaged searchlights. After hearing the ocean waves calling, you stroll out to an amazing view and head towards the iconic Fisgard Lighthouse, a beacon for mariners for over 150 years.

DAILY LIFE
Your morning routine is a walk about the site to ensure all the cultural heritage buildings, the collections and exhibits are neat, tidy and orderly before the visitor arrives. You may take notes of items that may need polishing, repair or replacement. Perhaps your stroll has sparked a few ideas for your upcoming “white glove” collections program which allows visitors to touch and learn about the amazing artefacts we have on site. As an integral part of the visitor services team, you work consistently on supporting the development of an annual exhibit, as well as communicating with other tourism and heritage partners on potential collections displays that could reach new visitors in the community. That said, you are not afraid to get dirty when tidying up the artifacts building, assisting assets if a cultural resource needs painting, or wiping the bird surprise that landed on one of the exhibits.

As the curator and collections guru, you breathe cultural resource management. You provide cultural resource guidance for understanding the heritage value of our cultural resources. This helps the site put human and financial resources to use where the benefits will be maximized, to ensure that our foundations are strong and sustainable for future generations — just as you would with your own house.

Work environment

In this role, you work collaboratively with Indigenous partners and stakeholders to build respectful, trusting relationships. You understand that Parks Canada is committed to a system of heritage places that recognizes and honours the contributions of Indigenous peoples. You know, by working together, we can do more to recognize Indigenous peoples’ leadership in the stewardship of their traditional lands, which often encompass heritage places administered by Parks Canada, and you are committed to working collaboratively with Indigenous partners to realize the (re)connection of communities to the lands and waters of their traditional territories and celebrating Indigenous cultures and histories.

You will engage with a small but dynamic team of interpreters to bring the stories of our National Historic Sites to life - through sharing your knowledge of artifacts with your co-workers, getting your hands dirty preparing for events, and offering a Hello/Bonjour to our visitors as you pass through the site. You will report to the Site and Visitor Experience Manager and provide input and advice at bi-weekly meetings.

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
