Curatorial Consultant - Request for Proposals
OPPORTUNITY
The Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia (CCM) has a unique opportunity for a qualified professional or team to take on a key creative role in the development of the future Chinese Canadian Museum. The Curatorial Consultant will work with museum staff, board members, and external advisory groups to prepare a curatorial plan and coordinate the development of the Chinese Canadian Museum’s first exhibitions for the grand opening of the museum.
ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
The Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia was founded in March 2020 as an independent, non-profit society to establish and operate a public museum in British Columbia honouring Chinese Canadian history, contributions, and living heritage. The CCM will be a testament to Chinese Canadian experiences, foster respect, inclusion, and collaboration among all communities and across generations. Telling stories through the diverse voices of Chinese Canadians is central to the development of CCM.
The Chinese Canadian Museum is now planning the development of its permanent home in the Wing Sang Building in Vancouver Chinatown. The Wing Sang Building at 51 East Pender Street, the oldest building in Vancouver Chinatown, is a testament to the rich history, cultural heritage, and contributions of Chinese Canadians in BC. The Wing Sang Building was built in 1889, expanded in 1901 and in 1912, by Chinese Canadian pioneer Yip Sang (1845 – 1927), a prominent figure in Vancouver Chinatown with his business and community involvement. In 2004, the Wing Sang Building was purchased and restored by Bob Rennie, who used the heritage building as office space and an art gallery. The Chinese Canadian Museum is privileged to continue the stewardship of this cultural asset.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Chinese Canadian Museum has committed to host a major exhibition by a Guest Curator for the grand opening of the museum. In coordination with the major exhibition, the Curatorial Consultant will utilize the CCM’s thematic plan, business plan, and other planning work to:

- Manage and support the development of the major exhibition with the Guest Curator.
- In coordination with the major exhibition, curate and develop the museum’s complementary exhibitions for the grand opening.
- Support the capital project manager in the functional programming and long-term exhibition requirements for the renovations of the museum.
- Identify and tender key sub-consultants required to implement exhibition development.
- Coordinate and lead a province-wide external curatorial advisory group on Chinese Canadian history and knowledge.
