COMMUNITY SERVICES ASSISTANT 3 – HISTORIC STEWART FARM

Scope

The City of Surrey is seeking a dynamic, collaborative and innovative Heritage Program Assistant at the Historic Stewart Farm, a vibrant heritage site located within Elgin Heritage Park, along the Nicomekl River. This temporary position forms an integral part of the team that delivers high quality educational programming, special events and a one-of-a-kind heritage experience. This 17-week position (approx. 30 hours/week) will be focused on implementing two visitor experience components of our new Strategic Plan. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing self-exploration guides, one for families and one for a general audience as well as creating one to two memorable moments in the visitor's experience - selfie opportunities or other shareable moments. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate pursuing a career in Museums or Heritage.

 

Responsibilities

  • Research and develop heritage interpretation activities and materials, including self-exploration guides
  • Research and develop visitor experience stations (memorable moments)
  • Deliver guided tours of the historic farmhouse and other features of the site.
  • Implement cash handling procedures.
  • Support volunteer training, hospitality and recognition. 
  • Purchase teaching collection artifacts and other program equipment and supplies.
  • Supervise and schedule volunteers and junior staff.
  • Assist in the development and distribution of promotional material.
  • Provide support for some curatorial-related tasks

 

Qualifications

  • Graduated from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Valid Emergency first aid/CPR C and AED certification.
  • Work experience in a cultural heritage facility, with training and experience in visitor experience or program development and delivery
  • Have excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills. 
  • Detail oriented person able to work well with various timelines.
  • Comfortable interacting with a variety of ages, cultures, individuals and groups and can handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
