Position Description:

Working as part of the Experiential Learning team, the Program Specialist will support the development, implementation, documentation, and evaluation of Science World’s Future Science Leaders (FSL) program.

Future Science Leaders is Science World’s flagship youth leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of the lower mainland’s most talented students. Each week, students participate in innovative learning and skill-building activities after learning about cutting-edge research, academic theory, and industry opportunities.

This position works closely with the Program Manager, Future Science Leaders to carry out a successful program. From planning sessions, preparing resources for sessions, managing online learning platforms, facilitating weekly sessions, and communicating with students and parents, the Program Specialist ensures the program is a success.

This position requires an enthusiastic, efficient, independent, and creative individual with a passion for organization and mentoring enthusiastic high school students. The Program Specialist has to be comfortable instructing high school students in STEM at a university level. Flexibility and confidence are required to work in this highly collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Delivery

  • Deliver Scientific Reasoning modules and General Skills activities, as agreed upon
  • Required attendance at the sessions which take place on Tuesday evenings from 4pm–8:30pm. Attendance at Thursday evening sessions in Surrey from 4 pm-8:30 pm based upon need
  • Enabling the success of Future Science Leaders (FSL) students in their work through weekly assignments, feedback, and communication

Program Development

  • Work with FSL team to develop lessons, student projects, and assignments to meet program goals, changing environments, and student feedback
  • Meet with guest instructors (fellows) to plan their lessons and provide feedback to ensure they meet FSL lesson requirements. Support fellows with logistics (materials, space, setup)
  • Develop and maintain relationships with contacts whom could be instructors or offer fieldtrips

Program Administration

  • Work with the Program Manager and Brand team to implement a student recruitment strategy
  • Document student information including applications and registration for all FSL programs (Vancouver and Surrey, Year 2 and Year 3)
  • Be the main FSL Year 1 program contact for Vancouver program students and parents
  • Coordinate necessary logistics (equipment, consumables, space, setup) to ensure each Year 1 FSL session runs smoothly in Vancouver and Surrey
  • Oversee documentation of lessons, attendance, and students’ assignments
  • Organize photos and information for parents, funders, marketing, and possible media stories
  • Organize and support students’ leadership work at community science events on weekends or evenings, as agreed upon
  • Plan, collect content, and prepare the year-end magazine for students

Other:

  • Assist in the organization and delivery of FSL events such as the Winter Showcase, Spring Showcase
  • Work with the team to find and attend additional opportunities for students (e.g. fieldtrips)
  • Perform any other duties as required

Qualifications:

You have a positive outlook and an infectious passion for mentoring high school students. You find opportunities when things don’t go as planned and can make the students in the program feel acknowledged.

  • Experience with teaching and/or developing youth programming
  • Must be comfortable presenting to a variety of audiences, specifically teens, funders, and peers
  • Must be willing to work regularly on weekday evenings and occasionally on weekends
  • Must be willing and able to travel on occasion as mutually agreed upon
  • Ability to work with attention to detail, with firm deadlines, and to manage multiple projects
  • A post-secondary degree in Science, Mathematics, or Engineering with research and leadership experience in one of these fields. A masters degree or graduate-level credentials preferred
  • Passion for connecting STEM professionals with youth
  • Must be physically able to safely lift at least 12kgs
