Programs and Events Coordinator, Permanent Position

 

The Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Centre is looking for a Programs & Events Coordinator.

While we are looking for a full-time person, consideration would be given to part-time (min 20hr a week) so this be desired by the candidate. Our wish is to provide a good work life balance within the strictures of our non-profit organization. The pay is $20hr and includes an extended health package and starts at three weeks holiday (prorated if working part-time), and 10 days sick leave and a staff discount in our gift shop.

A typical full time paid work week would be 37.5 hours (7.5 hours paid a day, plus a 30 minute lunch break). Some evening and weekend work would be required, but we are also able to work out flexible hours. Typically the museum is open to the public Tue – Saturday in the off season and 7 days a week in the summer and usually is closed to the public between Christmas and New Year’s. Professional Development funding is available.

The coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, carrying out and promoting programs and events, such as our Night Market, school programs, lectures, workshops, etc. The position will also supervise staff and volunteers in the process of their work. The manager will work with other museum staff to coordinate activities around exhibits, collections management and other key components of the organization. The position also supports the daily operations of the museum and visitor centre including assisting in the gift shop, answering visitor inquiries, opening and closing and other aspects of museum operations and other duties that may be required from time to time. The manager will report to the Executive Director.

The ideal candidate will have experience with organizing events and programs. Experience with Microsoft 365, social media and other communications technologies are an asset. Knowledge of nonprofits and museums would also be an asset.

The candidate will need Food Safe, Serving it Right and First Aid, and the BC Visitor Councellor Certificate (or pass these within the first 3 months of employment).

The museum is operated by the Sooke Region Historical Society a provincially registered nonprofit society and a federally registered charity which opened to the public in 1977. The community of Sooke is located 40km west of Victoria and is well known for its beaches and hiking.
