PUBLIC PROGRAMMER – MUSEUM OF SURREY

SCOPE

Museum of Surrey is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Public Programmer who loves writing programs for, and working with, unique communities and cultural groups. The regular hours are Tuesdays to Saturdays, 35 hours/week and rare evening shifts.

We are a people museum, committed to helping communities share their stories of identity, belief, struggle, and success. The Public Programmer is a key staff member in activating this mission through interactive, creative, and inspiring programs.

This supervisory position has significant responsibilities including the research, development and implementation of registered, virtual, and drop-in programs, workshops that relate to temporary exhibitions, seasonal opportunities, significant cultural dates, and community celebrations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As outlined in the museum’s annual plan, the Public Programmer ensures all public programs are written, developed, modified, and delivered reflecting MOS’ values of community, curiosity, engagement, connection, relevance, and stewardship.

• Plans, writes, and executes Public Programs for children, families, youth, and seniors.

• Orient, schedule, supervise and lead auxiliary staff, volunteers, and instructors.

• Deliver offsite programs and respond to new outreach opportunities.

• Coordinate presentations and tours.

• Support facility operations.

• Input registration data, monitor registrations, provide copy for promotions, and track expenditures and revenues. Input statistical data.

• Assist Curator of Programs with grant writing, budget alignment, scheduling, and other duties.

• Supervise programs staff and all Saturday staff

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Are familiar with principles and practices of museum interpretation, program delivery, and community development.

• Have planned and implemented a variety of child, youth, adult, and senior programs.

• Have demonstrated abilities to multi-task, track details, meet deadlines, and deliver results.

• Experience with redress and Indigenous reconciliation.

• Experience engaging and partnering with Indigenous Nations and diverse communities.

Applicants under consideration will have:

• A degree/diploma in a relevant discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution

• 2 years progressively responsible experience in an area of specialty that includes supervision or an equivalent combination of training and experience

• Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate.

• Experience working in a museum setting is an asset.

• Use of a vehicle and a valid BC Driver’s License.
