Museum Director

The position, Director, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is a combined managerial, curatorial, and public relations role responsible for SFU’s archaeological and ethnographic collections and their presentation to the public and the University community. The Director provides vision and leadership for the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and oversees all museum programmes and operations including management of the Museum budget.  The incumbent develops and implements the Museum’s five year plan in concert with that of the Department of Archaeology.  This includes setting priorities, policies, and procedures, in accordance with international professional, scholarly, and ethical standards. The Director manages, conserves, and enlarges the Museum’s assets through interaction with public donors, staff in University Advancement, Office of the VP Academic, Office of Aboriginal Peoples, SFU Art Galleries, and the Library, as well as university faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.  The Director oversees the activities of museum staff, researchers, research associates, volunteers, work study students, interns, student assistants, and others who use Museum collections and resources.  In doing this the Director ensures these individuals are working in compliance with international conventions, federal and provincial legislation, and University policies and procedures. The Director enhances the Museum’s and the University’s community engagement by establishing and maintaining a network of internal and external contacts and providing advice to small community museums.  

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, or a related discipline, with a minimum of ten years of experience in the management of archaeological and ethnological collections in a museum or heritage setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 

  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of planning, design, and management of museums, archives, and collections.
  • Excellent knowledge of the operating requirements of heritage facilities, specialized conservation treatments and laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent knowledge of federal and provincial heritage legislation.
  • Excellent knowledge of international standards of care and conventions of museum collections (e.g., those established by the International Council on Museums).
  • Excellent planning and administrative skills.
  • Excellent financial, human resources, and project management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, quantitative, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accurately interpret local situations within the context of international conventions, federal, and
  • provincial legislation, and SFU policies.
  • Ability to establish and main a network of internal and external contacts in the museum and heritage community.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and mature judgement.
  • Ability to train and mentor staff, volunteers, research associates, interns, work study students and others.
  • Proficient in the use of standard office applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
