Research Assistant, Zoology

The incumbent will be responsible for enhancing the productivity of the Research Division’s Zoology unit by providing scientific assistance to Research Scientists by participating in research activities and the publishing of results, and by providing expert advice and information to CMN staff, the scientific community, and other external clients. They will also contribute to science outreach through museum and related public programming.
The incumbent of this position will have the opportunity to participate in aquatic zoology fieldwork; however, the Museum encourages applications from diverse candidates and will consider on a confidential and individual basis, any requests for workplace accommodations from candidates who are unable to participate in fieldwork.

EDUCATION:

B.Sc. or an advanced degree in Biology or a related field (e.g., Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Aquatic Science, etc.), or a demonstrated equivalent combination of experience, education, and training;
Possession of a valid driver's license an asset.

EXPERIENCE :
• Experience in participating in aquatic fieldwork, particularly fishes; experience with freshwater mussels an asset.
• Experience in handling fish specimens; experience with freshwater mussels an asset.
• Experience in taxonomic, ecological, evolutionary, or related research working with fish specimens; experience with freshwater mussels an asset.
• Experience in one or more of the following techniques related to systematics and species/community identification: species description, molecular or morphological systematics, phylogenomics, phylogeography, population genetics, DNA barcoding,environmental DNA (eDNA), geometric morphometrics, community analysis.
• Experience in the operation of computers in a scientific environment, including use of common business software (e.g., Microsoft 365 suite)
• Experience in the use of phylogenetic and/or statistical software, such as R, BEAST, RAxML, Primer, etc.; experience with multivariate analyses an asset.
The following experiences will be considered as an asset:
• Experience working with collections, particularly fishes and/or molluscs, including care, collection, and/or research.
• Experience with identifying freshwater fishes and/or molluscs, in particular of Ontario and Quebec.
• Experience with identifying Arctic fishes.
• Experience in planning and coordinating the logistics for aquatic fieldwork.
• Experience in field and/or lab photography.
• Experience with geographic information system (GIS).
• Experience with Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, or other image editing programs for the design of publication-quality figures.
• Experience with snorkeling and/or SCUBA diving.
