Director, Content and Digital Strategies
The Canadian Museum of Nature is seeking a person to fill the full-time permanent position of Director, Content and Digital Strategies (the Director).
Reporting to the Vice-President, Experience and Engagement, the Director is accountable for overseeing the creation and execution of a museum-wide approach for developing and delivering content and overseeing the museum’s visitor facing digital platforms. Collaborating with staff across the museum, the Director, Content and Digital Strategies provides leadership and direction to define the direction, governance, planning and execution for the creative and innovative interpretation of the Museum’s mandate, vision and strategic direction through the development of content for exhibitions and visitor facing digital platforms to present a cohesive content approach for the visitors’ in person and digital experience. The Director supports the museum’s strategic objectives of creating extraordinary cultural experiences and programs, with a lens on staff development, IDEA, relevant science-based content, and strives to offer visitors, both in person and virtually, a fulsome connection with the museum by developing a comprehensive and cohesive high-quality experience.
This senior leadership role includes the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures, systems, and quality standards consistent with the Museum’s objectives for the development of content for the Museum’s permanent, temporary, special and traveling exhibitions as well as its visitor facing digital content, to maximize visitor attendance, revenue generation and support for the Museum’s national reach in terms of education and inspiration, while managing expenses to ensure that Experience and Engagement remains sustainable and financially viable. The Director sits as a member of the CMN management committee and on various internal and external boards and committees. They manage a team of approximately 11 employees, an annual budget of approximately $ 1.8 million per year including many multi-million dollar and multi-year projects.
The ideal candidate for this position is fluently bilingual (second language profile of CBC or higher) with a post-secondary education in museology a related field or an acceptable combination of education, formal and/or informal training, and experience plus several years of relevant progressive experience in in managing the development of in person and digital content in a museum, cultural institution or similar industry with a strong earned revenue component. They have professional knowledge of trends and developments in museology, and specifically in exhibition development, design and production and maintenance techniques. They also have sound knowledge of management principles and processes such as planning and evaluation strategies and processes, project management and resource control. They are a critical thinker
and problem solver with experience in developing, implementing and evaluating strategies and business plans and in translating strategies into operational plans. They also have experience in managing multiple large-scale projects and in allocating and managing financial and other resources.
