In this four-session virtual workshop, the POETRI of Interpretation will introduce you to the principles and practice of interpretation in a museum setting.  By the end of this virtual workshop, you will have learned how to focus your messages, distinguish between different styles of interpretation and ways of inspiring your visitors in thought, feeling, and action. 

 

Dates: June 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm PDT

 

Cost: $200 for BCMA members, $250 for non-members

Outline:

Week 1

Define interpretation and distinguish interpretation from formal education
Understand that good museum programming is Purposeful, Organized, Enjoyable, Thematic, Relevant, and Inspiring
Understand changes in Canadian society that require an up to date approach to museum education

Week 2

Identify goals and strategic outcomes for their own museum education program
Assess their own skills, knowledge, and interests in museum education/interpretation program and identify skills lacking
Distinguish between different styles or genres of museum interpretation programs, and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each to different audiences. Styles include: presentational, inquiry-based, dialogic, experiential.

Week 3

Understand thematic interpretation and draft a thematic framework for a program
Identify new needs and new points of view on existing thematic frameworks in light of best practices in diversity, equity, inclusion, truth, and reconciliation.

Week 4

Define and understand relevance in the museum context, and describe ways of understanding different audience types through demographics and psychographics
Describe inspiration within the museum education/interpretation context, and understand ways of inspiring visitors to thought, feeling, and action
